2005, 29th March, Lego Star Wars: The Video Game was released. This spawned the Lego Star Wars video game series. These games were very popular and created many great memories. In this article, I will be looking at the evolution of the Lego video game series. We begin with Lego Star Wars: The Video Game.
The game followed the plot of the Star Wars prequel trilogy. With the trilogy including Star Wars: the phantom menace, Star Wars: Attack of the clones, and Star Wars: revenge of the Sith. The movies were released in 1999, 2002, and 2005 in which all grossed about $2.526 billion. The movies were directed by George Lucas and are the prequels to the original Star Wars trilogy.
Star Wars: the video game was a family, child-friendly game with the game being challenging but not too challenging. It was released on PlayStation 2, GameCube, Game Boy Advance, Xbox, and PC. It allows for couch play with the game being able to hold two players. Its main gameplay features were puzzle-solving, interlaced with enemies. It has no game over with the only punishment for failure is losing some Lego studs (the currency of the game).
With the game being very highly praised and loved, another game was inevitable. On the 11th of September 2006, Lego Star Wars 2: the original trilogy was released. It again was produced by Jon Burton and TT.
The game followed the story of the first Star Wars trilogy which included A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. It is released as a sequel to the first game, it continued its genre and gameplay mechanics. This made it very accessible for the previous game’s players to move onto this game.
In the first week of release, it sold 1.1 million copies worldwide. It was praised by critics, many saying it was a much better game than the previous. The game was one of the biggest that year and claimed multiple awards. However, some critics were disappointed as the game didn’t last very long but the replayability was also praised.
In November of 2007, Star Wars: The Complete Saga was released. This game was just a combination of the two previous games, allowing players to play both games in one game. It splits the gameplay into 6 episodes which are accessed via the Mos Eisley Cantina, this would be the Hud of the game.
The game received generally positive reviews from critics and players alike. The game was the best-selling Lego game of all time but was surpassed by Lego Marvel Superheroes in 2017, however, it still holds the title of the bestselling Lego Star Wars game as of February 2017.
3 years after the beginning of the TV series and Star Wars: The clone wars; Lego Star War 3: The Clone Wars was released. Just like the games come before, it is an action-adventure game. However, it is not all the same. Some major improvements have been added.
Its biggest addition is the improved game lobby. Multiple rooms have been added in which many new functions are added. There are multiple rooms that allow for the users to use vehicles such as land and space vehicles. Different vehicles can be purchased with the game’s currency, studs, the same as the games previous.
Its plot is based on Star Wars: Episode 2 – Attack of the clothes, the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated film, and the first two seasons of the TV series. It has 18 levels, all split into 3 chapters in which Count Dooku, General Grievous, or Asajj Ventress plays as the antagonist for each chapter.
Reviews for the game were varied depending on the platform. Some critics said they “outdid themselves”, some said it was “the dullest in the entire series”. At the time of May 2012, the game had sold over 4 million copies worldwide.
For a few years, it seemed like Lego Star Wars had fallen off the face of the earth. In June 2016 they released Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It was the fifth release in the series and followed the plot of Star Wars: The Force Awakens but also delves into the period between the Return of the Jedi and the force awakens.
It follows the general gameplay formula for every other game in the series however adds a few features such as multi-builds and “blaster battle” behind cover with enemies. The game is the first in the series to have not been headed by Jon Burton, instead of switching to Jamie Eden, Pete Gomer, and Rob Hewson. However, the game was still developed by TT.
The game was received well, mostly getting positive reviews. The game was in fact the best-selling retail video game in the UK in its first week of release. After this game showed that there was still an interest in the Lego Star Wars brand, a new Lego Star Wars game was unavoidable.
Set for release in 2021 (a firm date not yet confirmed), this game will be the biggest Lego Star Wars game. The game plans to be the definitive Lego Star Wars game, following the Sky Walker saga of movies. This is all of the six movies starting from Star Wars: A New Hope to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
The game is having many changes made to the core elements which made the previous games. Such as the new fully revamped combat system. Lightsaber wielders will now be able to use combos, from light attacks, heavy attacks, and force attacks. Blaster wielders will now have the camera placed over the shoulder, similar to games like red dead redemption 2 and Star Wars Battlefront 2.
The games hub will become a range of fully explorable planets which will be filled with iconic Star Wars landmarks. Star cruisers will also be fully explorable places in the hub too, ships such as Star Destroyers and the Death Star. Whilst in the hub, random encounters can happen in which enemies could suddenly can and attack the player.
The game was said to be released on the 20th of October, 2020. This was told through a video on the Star Wars YouTube channel. The day the video was released it was made private and another version of that video was released in which the date was edited out.
It was then announced at 2020 Gamescom opening night live that the release was going to be in spring 2021, Q1/Q2. It was then delayed on the 2nd of April, 2021. As of writing, a date has not been set but fans propose it’s a positive thing that it is being delayed. This is because the developers get more time to work on the game.
In the end, I am excited about the game. Its new direction looks very interesting to me as I grew up on Lego games and the gameplay has got a bit stale with time. I look forward to playing the game.
